The Drover: Photographic record of the Brinkworth Cattle Drove, Alice Mabin
4 The Drover: Photographic record of the Brinkworth Cattle Drove
Alice Mabin Australia Alice Mabin 2014 0646918583 / 9780646918587 Hardcover New Book 34.0 x 28.8 x 2.0 cm Alice Mabin
The Drover by Alice Mabin - droving captured through the lens of a camera. The red dust swirls around you, filling your lungs and coating your face, the cattle low as they march onwards, you crack a cold one at the end of a long hot day. The path of a drover is a long and difficult one. Droving is woven in the fabric of Australian history, but droving cattle long distances is a rare event today. Now you can view the epic Brinkworth drove, as captured through the lens of photographer Al Mabin in her new book The Drover. During 2013's severe drought, South Australian farmer Tom Brinkworth purchased 18,000 cattle from AACo properties. The $8 million transaction was the largest single purchase in the history of Elders Livestock. Having purchased the cattle, the next question was how to get them home to Brinkworth's 35,000 hectare property Uardry Station near Hay, New South Wales. Doing the sums, the cost of trucking the cattle was roughly the same as walking them down. The journey started in June 2013, covering 2000km and crossing two states, as the cattle were walked south 'On the Long Paddock'. Mabin, who is building a reputation for her ability to capture spectacular photos of the Australian outback, tracked down the phone number of head drover Bill Little and asked if she could take photos of the drove one weekend. She found herself thrown on a horse and joining the drove. Heading home and scrolling through the photos, she realised she was missing the cattle and yearning for the drove. She decided to return and photograph all nine mobs. The result is the stunning coffee table book The Drover, going to the heart of droving, the people, and most importantly - the cattle. This book is sure to appeal to anyone who has ever fallen in love with the outback, and those who inhabit it. 196 pages.

Betty J. Percy Australia Foot & Playsted Pty Ltd 1993 0646136496 / 9780646136493 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Book 26.5 x 19 cm Signed by Author(s)
This book tells the stories of more than 750 craft, almost without exception privately owned, built by professional and non-professional boat builders and launched from the banks of the Tamar River. Racing abilities and tales of extended cruises are on record along with outstanding racing successes in Tasmanian coastal and Bass Strait waters. Inevitably there is also recorded for a few their loss through foundering or other sad circumstance. In addition there are items of historical interest about the River itself, together with old and pertinent papers, and photographs depicting varying sailing rig and styles of motor launches. The Tamar Boats can be regarded as a book of reference, and is a boating book with a difference as each craft has its own story to tell. Signed by the Author on the title page. Gentlemen of the Flashing Blade, Bianka Vidonja Balanzategui
10 Gentlemen of the Flashing Blade
Bianka Vidonja Balanzategui Australia Boolarong Press 2016 1925236056 / 9781925236057 Soft cover New Book 23.0 x 16.5 cm
When Branko stepped onto the deck of the Mohammedi, a displaced person refugee, he left behind him a war torn home land and loving family. In the sweat and dust of a North Queensland cane field youthful hopes and ambitions died. But there, at least, he breathed freely and moved without looking over his shoulder. He could dream that when he made good money and his country was free he would go home. Bianka Vidonja Balanzategui, historian and daughter of a displaced person cane cutter, takes the reader on a graphic and authentic journey from International Refugee Organization (IRO) Assembly Camp, across oceans to the shores of Australia and deep into the cane fields of tropical north Queensland. In that journey two major themes of north Queensland history, immigration and the sugar industry, meet. The migration of Displaced Persons to Australia between 1947 and 1951 was, in character and scale of preparation, unprecedented in the history of migration to Australia. When Branko arrived in Australia in 1949, the sugar crop of north Queensland was still cut by hand, by the oft mythologized Gentlemen of the Flashing Blade. Cane cutting was one of the least desirable unskilled occupations to which the displaced persons were allocated and one to which they made an invaluable contribution. Today the days of the manual cane cutter are no more. They are but the stuff of memory, history and legend. Gentlemen of the Flashing Blade celebrates and records those days with poignant effect, through a fictional character Branko Domanovic a displaced person cane cutter, an embodiment of the true Gentleman of the Flashing Blade.

Dark Emu Black Seeds: Agriculture or Accident?, Bruce Pascoe
12 Dark Emu Black Seeds: Agriculture or Accident?
Bruce Pascoe Australia Magabala Books 2014 1922142433 / 9781922142436 Soft cover New Book 23.0 x 15.2 x 1.0 cm
2016 NSW Premier's Literary Awards Indigenous Writers Prize Joint Winner! Dark Emu puts forward an argument for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer tag for precolonial Aboriginal Australians. The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing, harvesting, irrigating and storing – behaviours inconsistent with the hunter-gatherer tag. Gerritsen and Gammage in their latest books support this premise but Pascoe takes this further and challenges the hunter-gatherer tag as a convenient lie. Almost all the evidence comes from the records and diaries of the Australian explorers, impeccable sources. About the Author: Bruce Pascoe is a Bunurong man born in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond. He is a member of the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative of southern Victoria and has been the director of the Australian Studies Project for the Commonwealth Schools Commission. Bruce has had a varied career as a teacher, farmer, fisherman, barman, fencing contractor, lecturer, Aboriginal language researcher, archaeological site worker and editor.

It began with the great wave of megafauna extinctions in the last ice-age, and continues today, with many mammal species vulnerable to extinction. The question of why mammals became extinct, and why so many became extinct in Australia has been debated by experts for over a century and a half and we are no closer to agreement on the causes. This book introduces readers to the great mammal extinction debate. Chris Johnson takes us on a detective-like tour of these extinctions, uncovering how, why and when they occurred.
