2 The Tamar Boats: A Complete Reference Book [used book][rare]
Betty J. Percy Australia Foot & Playsted Pty Ltd 1993 0646136496 / 9780646136493 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Book 26.5 x 19 cm Signed by Author(s)
This book tells the stories of more than 750 craft, almost without exception privately owned, built by professional and non-professional boat builders and launched from the banks of the Tamar River. Racing abilities and tales of extended cruises are on record along with outstanding racing successes in Tasmanian coastal and Bass Strait waters. Inevitably there is also recorded for a few their loss through foundering or other sad circumstance. In addition there are items of historical interest about the River itself, together with old and pertinent papers, and photographs depicting varying sailing rig and styles of motor launches. The Tamar Boats can be regarded as a book of reference, and is a boating book with a difference as each craft has its own story to tell. Signed by the Author on the title page. Inscription on inside front endpaper reads 'To Uncle Trevor from Glenn, Margaret & Family July 1993'. Overall in very good codition. Dust jacket in Very Good Condition with some slight rubbing on front and rear.

Golden Miles: Sex, Speed & The Australian Muscle Car, Clinton Walker
3 Golden Miles: Sex, Speed & The Australian Muscle Car
Clinton Walker Australia Wakefield Press 2009 1862548544 / 9781862548541 Soft cover New Book 24.0 x 17.4 x 2.5 cm
Thirty years on the muscle car era still resonates. Why do these beautiful beasts hold to much fascination? Read Golden miles to get the truth about a time when modern Australia's real sense of itself was taking shape. GOLDEN MILES is an auto biography by Clinton Walker, a book about cars, people and place. Australia in the late 60s/early 70s was a young country bursting at the seams: charging through a brief window of opportunity between the end of colonialism and the beginning of globalism, the muscle car was the archetypal product of Australian suburbia, a fusion of the larrikin spirit and the sexual revolution, the Me Generation in overdrive ... GOLDEN MILES by Clinton Walker is a social history of these cars - the Holden Monaro, Falcon GT. Valiant Charger and others - whose sex drive has endured so strongly that they are now being reborn. With the energy and irreverent humour of a fanzine, the acuity of investigative journalism and the eye of an art book, this new, updated edition of GOLDEN MILES takes Australian non-fiction to a high level. As a critique of consumerism, a meditation on beauty, loss and national identity, and a rollicking yarn full of action and colourful characters, it is a reminder of a time when Australia - the world - was a wilder, freer place: a time when the muscle car ruled our lazy highways with a promise of danger and desire that casts a spell still.

Holden Days: From the Original 48-215 'FX' to the 1966 HR, Don Loffler
6 Holden Days: From the Original 48-215 'FX' to the 1966 HR
Don Loffler Australia Wakefield Press 2013 1743051158 / 9781743051153 Hardcover New Book 23.7 x 22.0 x 3.0 cm
This fifth Holden book by Don Loffler is a new initiative. It extends beyond the first two Holden series, the 48-215 'FX' and the FJ, and comprises a chapter on each of the first 10 Holden series, finishing with the 1966 HR. It is amazing that, although Don has already published over 1500 different photographs of FX and FJ Holdens in his first four books, he has tracked down another 100 new images for this book and, in addition, 300 photographs covering the FE to HR chapters. All images are from the era in which the cars were in their heyday. While the search and research for the images has involved considerable time and expense, the process has brought the handsome rewards of many new friendships and useful contacts for future books. As a result, his plans for a sixth book are well underway. This time, the book will feature photographs of rare and usual examples of the first 10 Holden series, with most of the vehicles being superbly restored, often from shocking wrecks. Much to the surprise of many, Don Loffler is not the son of a Holden dealer. He has never been a Holden factory employee, nor has he ever worked in the motor trade. He is a former German, Latin and Chemistry teacher, who in his retirement has the luxury of writing books on his lifetime interest in early model Holden cars, their history and the social setting into which they arrived. Born in Kapunda, South Australia, he gained an Arts degree and two Education diplomas from the University of Adelaide. His late wife, also a graduate with similar degrees from the same university, was his inspiration in the initial years of his book writing, and the tradition is now maintained by his adult son Michael and daughter Helen. Don has five new books in various stages of development, involving him in frequent Australia-wide travel and research. If that's retirement,' he says, 'I can't get enough of it!'

Holden Snapshots: Images from the Golden Years, Don Loffler
7 Holden Snapshots: Images from the Golden Years
Don Loffler Australia Wakefield Press 2015 174305386X / 9781743053867 Hardcover New New Book 24.0 x 22.0 x 2.5 cm
‘Having written the official history of Holden and then completed a PhD and related book on the origins of the Holden from deep within General Motors culture, I don’t always rush to read more material on Holdens … unless it is yet another of Don Loffler’s wonderful books. Like his previous five beautifully written and illustrated productions, Holden Snapshots is full of yarns about early model Holdens and their place in the lives of individuals and the broader cultural tapestry. By giving the old cars he features this full context, Don brings history to life in the most accessible and readable way.’ Dr. John M. Wright (PhD), eminent Australian motoring journalist and author of landmark Holden history, Heart of the Lion, and the groundbreaking research book, Special: The untold story of Australia’s Holden. Don Loffler has surprised himself, and probably many of his faithful readers, by writing this sequel to his fifth book, Holden Days, before completing the promised book on rare and unusual examples of the first ten Holden models. When Holden Days was released, he had no idea he would receive many new images from readers generally and, in particular, from the relatives and friends of those whose images appear in the book. In addition, Don kept locating new images through his own research. Holden Snapshots is the stunning result, a history of Holden in many new and never-before-seen images. Some people guess that Don Loffler is the son or relative of a Holden dealer, or a former Holden factory employee, or someone closely connected with the motor trade. He is none of these, but a retired German, Latin and Chemistry teacher, who is enjoying the process of writing books on his passion – the early Holden models and the history behind them. Born in Kapunda, South Australia,Don gained an Arts degree and two Education diplomas from the University of Adelaide. His late wife, also a graduate with similar degrees from the same university, was his inspiration in the initial years of his book writing, and the tradition is now maintained by his son Michael and daughter Helen. Don Loffler regards himself as fortunate indeed to be writing book seven, as well as planning further books on various motoring themes. What a retirement hobby! About the Author: Don lived in the small town of Wanbi, in South Australia's Murray Mallee, but on this particular day was idly wandering through the showroom of the car dealership in nearby Loxton. "While my dad was talking to some sales guys, I went in and had a look around and that was when I saw the first Holden, the 48-215 'FX'," Don says.

Hugh Lunn Australia ABC Books 2010 0733322514 / 9780733322518 Soft cover New Book Trade Paperback
This wonderful follow-up to the best-selling LOST FOR WORDS continues its humorous and nostalgic trip through our language. this long anticipated follow-up to the hugely successful and popular LOSt FOR WORDS revisits the rich, inventive and rogueish language Australians used to speak, before globalism stole it away. Hundreds of readers have responded to author Hugh Lunn's request and donated a torrent of forgotten words and sayings that he overlooked in his first book. 'So many arrived it was like trying to take a sip out of a fire hose,' Hugh said. 'And these words were so obvious, that if they were a snake, they would have bitten me by now.' WORDS FAIL ME intertwines the sayings and phrases of yesteryear with true stories and anecdotes and recaptures what Australian used to be like back when. Hugh also casts a satirical eye on modern language madnesses: the road signs, the asterisks, the gobbledegook andcorporate speak that have replaced our euphonious direct language. As they would say today: 'He is having issues!' Lovingly collected, WORDS FAIL ME takes delight in the way we once were; a people with their own unique lingo - clear, exaggerated and joyful.

Old Gold & Mining Towns of Australia [used book], John Darbyshire and C. E. Sayers
13 Old Gold & Mining Towns of Australia [used book]
John Darbyshire and C. E. Sayers Australia International Limited Editions 1975 0851799973 / 9780851799971 Hardcover Good Book 26 x 20 cm
The gigantic wealth of the goldfields changed the course of Australian history. Hundreds of thousands of new inhabitants flocked here from the other side of the world. They endured astounding hardships as they unearthed almost unbelievable quantities of gold. Hordes of diggers swarmed through the outback. Bush tracks became wide trampled roads. The diggers changed the face of the earth over huge areas. They diverted creeks, slashed into bush and forest, and burrowed deep in the soil. It was an era of frenzied excitement. Masses of men swarmed from one goldfield to another at news of a fresh strike. New towns sprang up within a few days. Countless diggers slaved in vain while others discovered huge nuggets. Violence flared in riots, fights and robberies. Storekeepers and publicans made their fortunes. Millions of dollars worth of gold had to be protected from bushrangers. Many souvenirs of the Roaring Days of the great gold rushes are still to be found. In this book, some of John Darbyshire's vivid paintings depict the ghost towns, the ancient deserted buildings and the strange landscapes created by the diggers in their wild search for fortune. Other paintings show some of the fine buildings financed by gold in such cities as Bendigo and the remnants of South Australian mining towns where copper was almost as important as gold. Each of the old gold and mining towns illustrated in this book is described in a graphic text by the noted historian C. E. Sayers. The combination of text and paintings creates a colourful and informative picture of the days when men risked everything for gold.

Mailman of the Birdsville Track: The Story of Tom Kruse, Kristin Weidenbach
14 Mailman of the Birdsville Track: The Story of Tom Kruse
Kristin Weidenbach Australia Hachette Australia 2014 0733633285 / 9780733633287 Soft cover New Book
The truly classic Australian story of Tom Kruse - legendary mailman of the Birdsville Track. For the people who lived in the desert between Marree and Birdsville, contact with the outside world was hard and sporadic - but one man was their lifeline: Tom Kruse. For more than twenty years he was the connection with the outside world for the families, station workers and others who lived along the Birdsville Track. Tom delivered everything from the mail and newspapers to fuel and food - whole communities waited in anticipation for him to drop off their supplies. But it was a hard life, from regularly making running repairs to his truck to unloading and reloading tons of stores so that he could ferry his cargo across flooded creeks. Come sandhills, hell or high water, Tom Kruse kept faith with the locals up and down the Track. Tom was a real Australian hero - and no matter what happened, the mail always got through. About the Author Kristin Wiedenbach became a writer after completing postdoctoral research at Stanford University in the United States. She has won several international awards for her writing and her articles have appeared in Science, Australian Geographic and academic publications. She is the author of Mailman of the Birdsville Track and the children's picture book, Tom the Outback Mailman, illustrated by Timothy Ide, and winner of the Eve Pownall Book of the Year Award, 2013.

Ned Kelly: The Story of Australia's Most Notorious Legend [unabridged audio CD], Peter Fitzsimons and read by Richard Aspel
15 Ned Kelly: The Story of Australia's Most Notorious Legend [unabridged audio CD]
Peter Fitzsimons and read by Richard Aspel Australia Bolinda 2013 1486202047 / 9781486202041 Audio Book (CD) New Audio Book
Love him or loathe him, Ned Kelly has been at the heart of Australian culture and identity since he and his gang were tracked down in bushland by the Victorian police and came out fighting, dressed in bulletproof iron armour made from farmers' ploughs. Historians still disagree over virtually every aspect of the eldest Kelly boy's brushes with the law. Did he or did he not shoot Constable Fitzpatrick at their family home? Was he a lawless thug or a noble Robin Hood, a remorseless killer or a crusader against oppression and discrimination? Was he even a political revolutionary, channelling the spirit of Eureka? Peter FitzSimons brings the history of Ned Kelly and his gang exuberantly to life, weighing in on all of the myths, legends and controversies generated by this compelling and divisive Irish-Australian rebel. About the Author Peter FitzSimons is a journalist with the Sun-Herald and the Sydney Morning Herald, and the author of more than 20 books, including How Hemlines Predict the Economy and Mawson.
