Rwanda Unamir 1994/95 #1 Australian Military History Series, Kevin O'Halloran
81 Rwanda Unamir 1994/95 #1 Australian Military History Series
Kevin O'Halloran Australia Big Sky Publishing 2012 1921941480 / 9781921941481 Soft cover New Book 24.5 x 17.5 x 1.3 cm
In 1994 a group of Australian UN peacekeepers, made up of soldiers and army medical personnel, was sent to Rwanda under a United Nations mandate to help restore order to the war-torn country. These Australians would be exposed to a lack of humanity they were not prepared for and found hard to fathom. On 22nd April 1995, the daily horror and tragedy they had witnessed escalated out of control. At a displaced persons' camp in Kibeho, in full view of the Australian soldiers, over 4,000 unarmed men, women and children died in a hail of bullets, grenades and machete blades at the hands of the Rwandan Patriotic Army. Constrained by the UN peacekeeping Rules of Engagement, these Australians could only watch helplessly and try to assist the wounded under the gaze of the trigger-happy killers. Pure Massacre is a record of what happened during this peacekeeping mission. Kevin "Irish" O'Halloran, a Platoon Sergeant at the time, stresses the weaknesses of the UN charter and what happens when "good men do nothing". He pulls together the perspectives of those Australian soldiers who served in Rwanda at this time. Pure Massacre gives a new and personal voice to the Kibeho Massacre. It takes a special type of bravery, discipline and compassion to do what these soldiers did. Little did they know, when the second tour of Rwanda was over, that they would be the highest decorated UN peacekeeping contingent since the Korean War. For many, their service in Rwanda would come with a personal toll. No Australians died during and immediately after the massacre at Kibeho, but as Pure Massacre testifies, the suffering and tragedy is embedded in their memories.

The Western Desert Campaign 1940-41 #2 Australian Army Campaigns Series, Lieutenant Colonel Glenn Wahlert

While the North African campaign has been studied in detail over the years, much of this study has been dedicated to the battles between the British 8th Army and Rommel's Afrika Korps. There has been little serious study of Wavell's campaign against Italian forces in 1940- 41, nor of the role played by the Australian 6th Division in the eventual Italian defeat. Part of this can be attributed to wartime propaganda that labelled the Italian Army dilettantes and mocked their courage. The truth is much different. Many Italian units showed incredible bravery, and the Australian assaults on fortress towns such as Bardia were far from a walkover. Today's aspiring military commanders need look no further than the early Western Desert campaign for historical examples of brilliant leadership, detailed planning, deception, surprise, manoeuvre warfare and relentless pursuit, all against overwhelming odds. About the Author Glenn Wahlert was born in Melbourne in 1956. He is a graduate of the Officer Cadet School Portsea, Army Command & Staff College, Deakin University and the University of NSW. After 20 years of service in the regular Army he transferred to the Army Reserve where he is currently a member of the Army History Unit, Canberra. Lloyd Pettiford and David Harding Australia Arcturus Publishing 2004 1841931543 / 9781841931548 Soft cover Good Book B-format
With cutting edge analysis of recent error attacks, such as 9/11 and the Bali bomb attack, Terrorism: The New World War offers a timely examination of the complex phenomenon of terrorism and the role it plays in modern society. Exhaustively researched and authoritative in scope, the book includes comprehensive biographies of major terrorist groups and individuals. It discusses in detail the most infamous acts of terror perpetrated from the kidnapping and murder of the Italian prime minister Aldo Moro, to the US-Iranian hostage crisis of 1979. In the light of recent events it also provides a startling look at the possible future of terrorism and its impact on the Western world. Emotions that can overcome people at times of personal, national or global tragedy are often powerful and stark in their simplicity. This book is an attempt to explore the belief that problems rarely have easy answers and to show that terrorism today is complicated and threatening reality.

The Knights of Bushido: A History of Japanese War Crimes During World War II, Lord Russell of Liverpool
85 The Knights of Bushido: A History of Japanese War Crimes During World War II
Lord Russell of Liverpool USA Skyhorse Publishing 2008 1602391459 / 9781602391451 Soft cover New Book 20.6 x 13.5 x 2.8 cm
The war crimes trials at Nuremberg and Tokyo meted out the Allies' official justice; Lord Russell of Liverpool's sensational bestselling books on the Axis' war crimes decided the public's opinion. "The Knights of Bushido," Russell's shocking account of Japanese brutality in the Pacific in World War II, describes how the noble founding principles of the Empire of Japan were perverted by the military into a systematic campaign of torture, murder, starvation, rape, and destruction. Notorious incidents like the Nanking Massacre and the Bataan Death March emerge as merely part of a pattern of human rights abuses. Undoubtedly formidable soldiers, the Japanese were terrible conquerors. Their conduct in the Pacific is a harrowing example of the doctrine of mutual destruction carried to the extreme, and begs the question of what is acceptable--and unacceptable--in total war.

In May 1915 he joined the flying service, initially as an observer then as a pilot, flying two-seaters. In August 1916, ace fighter pilot Oswald Boelcke recruited von Richthofen into a fighter squadron he was forming. He would later take command of Jasta 11, and then of Jagdgeschwader 1, the famous 'Flying Circus'. Manfred von Richthofen would be shot down and killed on 21 April 1918. Spetsnaz: Russia's Special Forces #206 Elite, Mark Galeotti
87 Spetsnaz: Russia's Special Forces #206 Elite
Mark Galeotti UK Osprey Publishing 2015 1472807227 / 9781472807229 Soft cover New Book 24.8 x 18.4 x 0.7 cm
When the shadowy, notorious Spetsnaz were first formed, they drew on a long Soviet tradition of elite, behind-the-lines commando forces from World War II and even earlier. Throughout the 1960s-70s they were instrumental both in projecting Soviet power in the Third World and in suppressing resistance within the Warsaw pact. As a powerful, but mysterious tool of a world superpower, the Spetsnaz have inevitably become the focus of many 'tall tales' in the West. In this book, a peerless authority on Russia's military Special Forces debunks several of these myths, uncovering truths that are often even more remarkable. Now, since the chaotic dissolution of the USSR and the two Chechen Wars, Russian forces have seen increasing modernization, involving them ever more in power-projection, counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism and the Spetsnaz have been deployed as a spearhead in virtually all of these operations. This book offers a unique, absorbing guide to the secrets of the Spetsnaz, their most noteworthy missions and personalities, but is also packed with details such as orders-of-battle, equipment and operational doctrine.

Guadalcanal 1942-43: America's First Victory on the Road to Tokyo #284 Campaign, Mark Stille
88 Guadalcanal 1942-43: America's First Victory on the Road to Tokyo #284 Campaign
Mark Stille UK Osprey Publishing 2015 147280693X / 9781472806932 Soft cover New Book 24.8 x 18.4 x 0.8 cm Peter Dennis
The Guadalcanal campaign began with an amphibious assault in August 1942 - the US' first attempt to take the fight to the Japanese. It escalated into a desperate attritional battle on land, air, and sea, and by the time the Japanese had evacuated the last of their forces from the island in 1943, it was clear that the tide of the war had turned. The inexorable Japanese advance and the myth of Japanese invincibility shattered. In this new study of the campaign, Pacific War expert Mark Stille draws on both US and Japanese sources to give a balanced and comprehensive account of a crucial, brutal conflict. Analyzing the three Japanese attempts to retake the island in the face of ferocious American resistance, this book shows how the battle was won and lost, and how it affected the outcome of the Pacific War as a whole.

US Navy Carrier Aircraft vs IJN Yamato Class Battleships: Pacific Theater 1944-45 #69 Duel, Mark Stille
89 US Navy Carrier Aircraft vs IJN Yamato Class Battleships: Pacific Theater 1944-45 #69 Duel
Mark Stille UK Osprey Publishing 2015 1472808495 / 9781472808493 Soft cover New Book 21.0 x 15.0 x 2.2 cm Jim Laurier
As the Pacific War approached a crescendo, the clashes between swarming US Navy carrier aircraft, and the gigantic Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Yamato-class battleships became symbolic of the fortunes of the two nations. They also served as a metaphor for the profound changes in naval technology and doctrine that the war had brought about. The two opposing forces were the most powerful of their kind - the Japanese Yamato and Musashi were the biggest most heavily armored and armed battleships ever built, while US carrier aviation had evolved into a well-oiled, war-winning machine. With detailed analysis of the technical features of the opposing war machines and a gripping account of the fighting itself, this vividly illustrated work presents views from the cockpits of US Navy Divebombers, and down the sights of IJN anti-aircraft guns, during two of the most dramatic naval engagements ever fought.

US Standard-Type Battleships 1941-45 1: Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Mexico Classes #220 Osprey New Vanguard, Mark Stille
90 US Standard-Type Battleships 1941-45 1: Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Mexico Classes #220 Osprey New Vanguard
Mark Stille UK Osprey Publishing 2015 1472806964 / 9781472806963 Soft cover New Book
Written by US Navy expert Mark Stille, this book offers a unique insight into the Standard-type classes of US battleships. It provides a detailed investigation into the histories of each of the warships in the Standard-type battleship classes, the first three of which, the Nevada, Pennsylvania and New Mexico, formed the US Navy's main force in the inter-war period. The Standard-types reflected a new design philosophy: by designing each class to meet common standards of maneuvrability and handling, vessels of different classes could operate as a single tactical unit without being limited by the performance of the slowest and least maneuvrable ship. At the time of their construction, these ships incorporated the latest design features such as triple gun turrets. Although they were rendered increasingly obsolete by evolving naval doctrines and the ascendance of the fast battleship, they served with distinction throughout World War II. This study combines analysis of design features and an absorbing narrative of operational histories to offer a comprehensive picture of the Standard-type battleships, from the brutal destruction of the USS Arizona to the triumphant occupation of Japan.

The Ottoman Defence Against the Anzac Landing: 25 April 1915 #16 Australian Army Campaigns Series, Mesut Uyar
92 The Ottoman Defence Against the Anzac Landing: 25 April 1915 #16 Australian Army Campaigns Series
Mesut Uyar Australia Big Sky Publishing 2015 1925275019 / 9781925275018 Soft cover New Book 24.5 x 17.5 x 1.2 cm
The landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 represents a defining moment, not only for Australia and New Zealand, but also for Turkey. However a detailed account of the landing from the Turkish perspective has yet to be published in English despite the 100 years that has elapsed since the first ANZACs scrambled ashore. Descriptions of the Ottoman forces such as the composition of units, the men who commanded them, their weapons, capabilities and reactions to the ANZAC invasion have generally remained undocumented or described in piecemeal fashion based on secondary sources. The lack of a Turkish perspective has made it almost impossible to construct a balanced account of the events of that fateful April day. The Ottoman Defence against the Anzac Landing: 25 April 1915 seeks to redress this imbalance, portraying the Ottoman experience based on previously unpublished Ottoman and Turkish sources. This meticulously researched volume describes the Ottoman Army in fascinating detail from its order of battle, unit structure and composition, training and doctrine to the weapons used against the ANZACs. Using Ottoman military documents, regimental war diaries, personal accounts and memoirs, author Mesut Uyar describes the unfolding campaign, unravelling its complexity and resolving many of the questions that have dogged accounts for a century. This valuable chronicle will enhance readers' understanding of the Ottoman war machine, its strengths and weaknesses and why it proved so successful in containing the Allied invasion. Detailed maps and photographs published for the first time add clarity and portray many of the men the ANZACs referred to with grudging respect as 'Johnny Turk'. About the Author: Mesut Uyar, a graduate of Turkish Military Academy, is an associate professor of Ottoman military history at the University of New South Wales, Canberra. A specialist in war studies and military history, he has published articles on Ottoman military and operations other than war.

Enduring Freedom, Enduring Voices: US Operations in Afghanistan, Michael G. Walling
95 Enduring Freedom, Enduring Voices: US Operations in Afghanistan
Michael G. Walling UK Osprey Publishing 2015 1782008292 / 9781782008293 Hardcover New Book
"Michael Walling has honored the American men and women who served in Operation Enduring Freedom by helping them tell their own stories. This is the war in Afghanistan as experienced by the people who fought it." General Tommy R. Franks, Ret. The war in Afghanistan has seen men and women thrown into America's longest sustained combat operation. For over 13 years, US military personnel have been embroiled in a conflict unlike any other, in a hostile country where danger and death lurk at every turn. The nature of the fighting has transformed not only the entire structure of the US military, but the lives of every soldier, sailor, marine, coast guardsman, and airman who served there. There have been many tales told of this most recent Afghan war, but until now no single work has combined the strategic view of high-level commanders with the perspective of soldiers on the ground. This book places the first-hand accounts of serving men and women into the context of the military operations. Drawing on gripping oral histories from theater commanders, Special Forces troops, reconstruction teams, and everyday soldiers, Michael G. Walling analyzes operations as they were experienced by individuals, from those immediately following 9/11 through to those in 2014 as US troops prepared to withdraw. He also charts the evolution of US military structure as it was forced to adapt to cope with the non-conventional, but nonetheless deadly threats of asymmetric warfare, as well as detailing covert ops, infrastructure rebuilding, and the training of Afghan forces. Resonating across gender, age, nationality, and ethnicity, this book is not just a document of US fortunes in a far-flung conflict. It is a tribute to the determination, heroism, sacrifice, and the strength of the human spirit.

Greece: February to April 1941 #13 Australian Army Campaigns Series, Michael Tyquin
96 Greece: February to April 1941 #13 Australian Army Campaigns Series
Michael Tyquin Australia Big Sky Publishing 2014 1922132616 / 9781922132611 Soft cover New Book 24.5 x 17.5 x 1.0 cm
As with the failed attempt to seize the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915, the allied campaign to assist Greece against a seemingly invincible German juggernaut was poorly conceived and probably doomed even as plans were made to assist that country. Like any campaign, however, it holds lessons for the contemporary student of strategy, tactics and history.Greece presented singular geographic difficulties for the defending forces, its mountainous defiles dictating the distribution of ports, road and rail routes. The primitive state of the national infrastructure did little to help a long-term defensive posture. Operations in Greece proved to be a nightmare, particularly for logistics units, which struggled with primitive communication systems in rugged terrain over which the enemy enjoyed total air superiority.Poor liaison between the Greek and Commonwealth forces did not help matters, nor was the force deployed adequate for its task. The allies never enjoyed air superiority, nor could they consolidate any in-depth defence in time to be effective. The official British history of the campaign stated that the 'British campaign on the mainland of Greece was from start to finish a withdrawal'.Greece: February to April 1941 explores these complexities, and mistakes through the eyes of the Australian Army Medical Corps. About the Author Doctor Michael Tyquin is a consulting historian based in Canberra. He has published extensively in the areas of Australian social, medical and military history. He is a serving member of the Australian Army Reserve which he joined as a medical assistant with the 4/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse. He is the official historian of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland's Centre for Military and Veterans' Health.

Sudan: 1885 #15 Australian Army Campaigns Series, Michael Tyquin
97 Sudan: 1885 #15 Australian Army Campaigns Series
Michael Tyquin Australia Big Sky Publishing 2015 1922132993 / 9781922132994 Soft cover New Book 24.5 x 17.5 x 1.0 cm
The involvement of an Australian colonial military force in Britains Egyptian campaigns between 1883 and 1885 was very short, extending for only five months overall, including the pre-deployment phase. Consequently its influence on these campaigns was insignificant. Nevertheless, our involvement in the Sudan in 1885 is part of Australia's military history. This book provides the context for Australia's involvement in the Sudan, and follows operations chronologically. The call in the 1880s for jihad or 'holy war' by Sudanese leaders shows us that some of our current global challenges are not new.

Training for War: The History of Headquarters 1st Division 1914-2014, Michael Tyquin
98 Training for War: The History of Headquarters 1st Division 1914-2014
Michael Tyquin Australia Big Sky Publishing 2017 1925520420 / 9781925520422 Hardcover New Book 25.4 x 17.6 x 2.0 cm
Training for War encapsulates one hundred years of the history of Headquarters 1st Division and the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters. During that time the Headquarters has commanded subordinate formations and units; soldiers; and assets. They all have a place in this story as do many distinguished Australians who have had a close association with the Division, either commanding it or holding senior positions there. This study looks at the organisation's high water mark in World War One as well as quieter times between the world wars, before the tempo picks up again in the period closer to our own time. As with any military formation it cannot be studied in isolation from politics and policy and so reference is made to wider events in the Australian political and Defence environment. For those wanting new insights into one of the Australian Army's most historic divisions this work should satisfy their needs.
