3 The Tamar Boats: A Complete Reference Book [used book][rare]
Betty J. Percy Australia Foot & Playsted Pty Ltd 1993 0646136496 / 9780646136493 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Book 26.5 x 19 cm Signed by Author(s)
This book tells the stories of more than 750 craft, almost without exception privately owned, built by professional and non-professional boat builders and launched from the banks of the Tamar River. Racing abilities and tales of extended cruises are on record along with outstanding racing successes in Tasmanian coastal and Bass Strait waters. Inevitably there is also recorded for a few their loss through foundering or other sad circumstance. In addition there are items of historical interest about the River itself, together with old and pertinent papers, and photographs depicting varying sailing rig and styles of motor launches. The Tamar Boats can be regarded as a book of reference, and is a boating book with a difference as each craft has its own story to tell. Signed by the Author on the title page. Inscription on inside front endpaper reads 'To Uncle Trevor from Glenn, Margaret & Family July 1993'. Overall in very good codition. Dust jacket in Very Good Condition with some slight rubbing on front and rear.

5 Darren Lockyer Autobiography [used book]
Darren Lockyer and Dan Koch Australia Ebury 2011 1864712732 / 9781864712735 Hardcover Good Book Royal
Darren Lockyer will celebrate his 34th birthday this year. Of those 34 years, 17 have been spent putting his body through hell in perhaps the toughest football competition on the planet. Lockyer has, quite literally, spent half his lifetime in the NRL. By season's end Lockyer is set to hold the all-time appearance record for club, state, and country. The remarkable longevity of Lockyer's excellence has earned him the respect of fellow athletes around the world and the adoration of fans everywhere. But while undoubtedly one of the most recognizable athletes in Australia, Lockyer has largely maintained his privacy, rarely, if ever, allowing fans a look at the man behind the man. In this book Lockyer, for the first time, opens up on the people, places, incidents, and events which have shaped the life and career of an Australian sporting icon. From his days growing up and working at the family-owned truck stop on the outskirts of a tiny Queensland town, to his arrival at the Broncos as a teenage sensation, and subsequent ascension toward rugby league immortality, "Lockyer" will shed new light on some of the biggest names and stories of the past two decades. Contributions from Lockyer's family and friends, as well as legendary figures give this book a unique edge, each providing a rare insight into their view on Lockyer the player, the leader, and the man.

Helmand to the Himalayas: One Soldier's Inspirational Journey, David Wiseman and Nick Harding
7 Helmand to the Himalayas: One Soldier's Inspirational Journey
David Wiseman and Nick Harding UK Osprey Publishing 2014 1472809130 / 9781472809131 Soft cover New Book
"From the war torn valleys of Afghanistan to the frozen peaks of the Himalayas, David Wiseman's incredible story is an inspiration to us all." Andy McNab David Wiseman was the first soldier on the scene of one of the most devastating attacks on British soldiers in Afghanistan, witnessing the horrific aftermath of an attack on unsuspecting troops by a rogue element of the Afghan police, which left five men dead and nine wounded, shaking the British forces in Helmand to the core. Only a few weeks later, and haunted by what he had experienced, David was once again fighting shoulder to shoulder with his Afghan allies, but this time would leave the battlefield with a Taliban bullet lodged deep in his chest, inches from his heart. Helmand to the Himalayas is the dramatic story of his journey in combat, his agonising battle with physical injuries and psychological demons and his life affirming recovery as part of a pioneering mountaineering team. An exhilarating memoir of his gritty tour of Afghanistan, it reveals the day-to-day hardships faced by soldiers in battle, the horrors and absurdities of the conflict and the overwhelming challenges and dangers that have faced British soldiers tasked with mentoring their Afghan allies. With staggering honesty, David reveals how frustration and chance eventually led him to find salvation, renewed purpose and a sense of pride on the slopes of Mount Everest with Walking With The Wounded and an unlikely band of wounded veterans. In his latest step on the road to recovery, David played a key role as Games Co-Ordinator for the inaugural Invictus Games in September 2014, as well as representing the United Kingdom as part of the swimming team. In a competition which saw more than 400 wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women from 13 nations compete, David went on to complete another momentous achievement, winning gold medals in the Men's 100m Freestyle ISD and in the Mixed 4 x 50m Freestyle relay, and silver medals in the Men's 50m backstroke ISD and Men's 50m Freestyle ISD.

10 Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster Who Created Vegas Poker
Doug J. Swanson UK Amberley Publishing 2015 1445648172 / 9781445648170 Soft cover New Book 19.8 x 12.4 x 2.8 cm
Benny Binion was many things: a cowboy, a pioneering casino owner, a gangster, a killer, and founder of the hugely successful World Series of Poker. From a Texas backwater, Binion rose to prominence on a combination of vision, determination, and brutal expediency. His formula was simple: run a good business, cultivate the big boys, kill your enemies, and own the cops. Through a mix of cold-bloodedness, native intelligence, folksiness and philanthropy, Binion became one of the most revered figures in the history of gambling, and his showmanship, shrewdness and violence would come to dominate the Vegas scene. Veteran journalist Doug Swanson uses once-secret government documents and dogged reporting to show how Binion destroyed his rivals and outsmarted his adversaries, playing a crucial role in the shaping of modern Las Vegas.

Treasure! Coin and relic hunting has come of age. No longer is treasure hunting the realm of the get-rich-quick fringe and the bad reputation associated with the destruction of historic sites. Metal detectors are now recognised as sophisticated detection tools that can distinguish precious metals from surrounding soils and rubbish. This ensures minimum disturbance to the search area. This guide has been designed to enable you to identify your finds and put them into context within Australia's evolving history. We describe the specialist metal detectors which will help to detect valuable coins and jewellery among the junk strewn fields. This is especially important when detecting in public parks and beaches. We also describe the specialist tools and electronic pin-pointing devices that will assist in both the park and beach. This guide covers: Man-made or natural targets, How metal detectors work, Detector operation technique, Specialised tools for coin & relic extraction, Choosing a treasure hunting detector, Where to treasure hunt, Research, Themes to stimulate your search, The law of finding, Identifying your finds, Displaying your finds, Treasure hunts & ethics,

Grant's Guide to Fishes: The Fisherman's Bible 12th Edition, E. M. Grant
17 Grant's Guide to Fishes: The Fisherman's Bible 12th Edition
E. M. Grant Australia Grant's Fish Books 2014 0646141066 / 9780646141060 12th Edition Hardcover New Book 25.0 x 18.0 x 5.0
Grant's Guide to Fishes. The Fisherman's Bible. 12th Edition. 880 pages with 1078 Fish, Sharks and Rays. 1007 colour photographs. Ern Grant has spent more than 60 years catching fish and half that time photographing them. Grant's Guide to Fishes has become an Australian institution in fishing circles - it's subtitle "The Fisherman's Bible" was coined by its many loyal followers and readers. It has its origin almost 50 years ago, with the first edition produced in 1965, and since then, 116,500 copies have been produced, making it arguably the longest-running and best-known book on fish identification in Australia. Although originally Queensland-centric, it now covers all commonly-caught fish across Australia. It contains: 1078 fish, sharks & rays. 1007 colour photographs, many full-plates, and all bled to the page edge for maximum size. A new pictorial index called "A Guide to the Guide", a photo index of typical types of fish. For example, if you see something like a whiting, and find a fish like it in this index, it leads you to a page of whiting. Therefore, other whiting can be found in that part of the book. Grant's Guide to Fishes is well-known across the country, and copies have sold in every state. It is an institution, and many readers have commented that no other book comes close to its quality and the ability to identify an Australian fish. The author, Ern Grant, spent most of his career as Queensland ichthyologist (fish scientist) and amassed an enormous knowledge and photographic record of Australian fish through his lifetime. He continues to write and update the book at age 90, and the latest 12th edition is a continuing evolution of this lifetime's work. Grant's Guide to Fishes is the culmination of a journey which can trace its origins in 1963. Asked by his mentors and seniors in the then Department of Harbours & Marine to produce a guide to commercial fishes in Queensland, Ern Grant wrote a small black-and-white production called Know Your Fishes. From this humble beginning came the first Guide to Fishes, produced also by the Queensland Government, and starting in 1965 with its first edition. This book had no photographs, but relied on the then-common method of identification through painstaking drawings by delineators (very skilled draftsmen/artists). However, Ern's contacts said: "Surely even a poor photograph is better to identify a fish than a great drawing?" And so began a lifetime of work in collecting a massive range of fish - in photographs. Many of these were hand-captured by net, line or chasing down over sand, mud or coral reefs and collecting by hand-scoop. The second edition in 1972 received the benefit of the first set of these photographs, and the Government editions ended in 1982 with the fifth edition of Guide to Fishes. Initially unable to gain permission to update the Government Guide to Fishes once in retirement, Grant went on to produce a brand new book, Fishes of Australia privately in 1987, and Corals of the Great Barrier Reef in 1991. This new private production of the Guide, as Grant's Guide to Fishes, first appeared in 1993 with the sixth edition, and it and later editions achieved the same measure of public acceptance as before. Each edition is edited to take advantage of new technology, new photographs, and updated information on fish identification, groupings and maximum sizes. For example, Ern worked on the 12th edition for 6 years, and has continued evolving, updating and improving it over previous editions. This is a heavy book weighing 2.5kg.

Sunline: Heart of a Champion [used book][hard to get], Fiona McKee
20 Sunline: Heart of a Champion [used book][hard to get]
Fiona McKee New Zealand Penguin 2005 0143020269 / 9780143020264 Soft cover Good Book 23.0 x 15.3 x 1.3 cm
Sunline holds the record for winnings amongst the inductees to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, and was the only horse to be inducted while still racing. She was, quite simply, a freak horse - always leading from the front, built like a stallion, a champion of champions - as epitomised by her record as a two-times winner of the elite Cox Plate. This is the story of how she came to be recognised as a great galloper by her owner and trainer Trevor McKee, who almost reluctantly took her on, only to discover as a morning gallop session that he had acquired a one-in-several-millions horse. The McKee's own story is part of that tale, from their humble beginnings, taught to ride bareback by their father, to becoming the rich and rewarded owner-trainers of a legendary galloper (descended from the great Phar Lap).
