Helping Your Child with Selective Mutism: Practical Steps to Overcome a Fear of Speaking, Angela E. McHolm and Charles E. Cunningham and Melanie K. Vanier
3 Helping Your Child with Selective Mutism: Practical Steps to Overcome a Fear of Speaking
Angela E. McHolm and Charles E. Cunningham and Melanie K. Vanier USA New Harbinger Publications 2005 157224416X / 9781572244160 2nd Edition Soft cover New Book 22.8 x 15.2 x 1.0 cm
Often described as "social phobia's cousin" and misdiagnosed as autism, selective mutism is a debilitating fear of speaking in some situations experienced by some children. The disorder usually presents in children before the age of five, but it may not be recognized until the child starts school. When requested to speak, children with selective mutism often look down, blush, or otherwise express anxiety that disrupts their engagement with people and activities. Selective mutism is related to social anxiety and social phobia, and more than 90 percent of children with selective mutism also manifest symptoms of one of these problems. This book is the first available for parents of children with selective mutism. It offers a broad overview of the condition and reviews the diagnostic criteria for the disorder. The book details a plan you can use to coordinate professional treatment of your child's disorder. It also explains the steps you can take on your own to encourage your child to speak comfortably in school and in his or her peer group. All of the book's strategies employ a gradual, "stepladder" approach. The techniques gently encourage children to speak more, while at the same time helping them feel safe and supported. Angela E. McHolm, Ph.D., is director of the Selective Mutism Service at McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, ON. The Selective Mutism Service offers outpatient psychiatric consultation to families and professionals such as school personnel, speech and language pathologists, and mental health clinicians who support children with selective mutism. She is assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON.

9 Let's Eat: A guide to mealtime management of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder *** OUT OF STOCK ***
Autism Association of Western Australia Australia Autism Association of Western Australia 2014 1921423137 / 9781921423130 Soft cover New Book
Let's Eat! provides everything you need to know about children's mealtime difficulties and how they can be resolved. It provides a framework-based on a wide range of peer reviewed research-to help parents and teachers assess and identify the mealtime challenges for their children. With a good understanding of why the child has difficulty with mealtimes and with certain foods, it shows how by instilling fun into all aspects of food many problems associated with eating may be mitigated. We include fun recipes, fun song lyrics associated with food and templates of fun activities to reinforce the playfulness of food and eating. The book aims to help caregivers and educators work towards a more positive mealtime experience for all concerned. Although the book has been written primarily to address mealtimes, we believe that much of the information provided will be useful across a range of everyday activities. We show that important elements of a mealtime management program might entail adapting the environment, creating routines and using visual supports-well known ways of effectively supporting people with Autism throughout their day-to-day lives.

On the Wings of a Butterfly: A Special Story to support conversations on grief and loss, Belinda Messer
14 On the Wings of a Butterfly: A Special Story to support conversations on grief and loss
Belinda Messer Australia Boolarong Press 2016 0992538734 / 9780992538736 Hardcover New Book 21.1 x 18.4 x 0.5 cm
This very special book on grief for young children up to 9 years is suitable for all children who are experiencing the loss of a loved one or who are preparing for the loss of a somebody close to them. Coming from a place of permission and comfort, this book will help a young one through this sad and very difficult to understand time. I drew upon my own experiences when writing this book and used what would have made me feel better when I was a little girl losing my father at a very young age. Most children will experience loss during their childhood. Be it a close family member, pet, a baby born sleeping or somebody they know. I would be very happy to have bought comfort to families with my little book. Critique "Life is wonderful and joyous and thrilling but as adults we know that it can also be brutally tough at times. On The Wings Of A Butterfly beautifully guides children through the death of a loved one. Frankly, it's a must-have for every family bookshelf. Thank you, Belinda Messer for helping me explain loss to my kids." Rebecca Sparrow, author and columnist. "On the Wings of a Butterfly is a book written from the heart. I is an engaging resource which provides a framework for children to think about life and loss. This book encourages individuality in remembering loved ones after their death. Beautiful illustrations complement the text. I look forward to sharing this story at the clinic, Dr Peta Lilley, Clinical Psychologist "A lovely children's book that well explains the death of a loved one and the grief and loss that may follow. It gently guides them through questions and feelings that they might experience. I highly recommend this book for children aged 4 and over." Esther Elliot Professional Counsellor "My eight year old daughter loved it. And because it ends on a positive perspective, she wasn't weighed down from the heaviness of the topic, she was uplifted by the excitement of life's possibilities." Caity Longmire, Grief and Loss Counsellor.

I Love Me: A Guide to being Your Own Best Friend, Bev Aisbett
16 I Love Me: A Guide to being Your Own Best Friend
Bev Aisbett Australia Harper Collins 2013 0732289017 / 9780732289010 Soft cover New Book
From the bestselling author of LIVING WITH IT comes a breakthrough work that is the culmination of years of searching for the 'bottom line' of the malaise which affects not only those who suffer with anxiety and depression but also human beings in general in ever-increasing numbers. This feeling manifests as anything from dissatisfaction to rage, bullying to brutality, self pity to cynicism. It contaminates happiness, sabotages potential and saps joy. The malaise is not discriminating: it equally infects world leaders and ordinary citizens. What is this sickness? It is a lack of joy. It means existing instead of living, finding oneself empty and afraid, angry, blaming or bored senseless. It is marrying the wrong spouse, staying in the job you hate, eating the wrong foods, becoming addicted, being lonely, falling ill, feeling lost. But take heart, there is a cure, which is free, powerful and accessible to all - LOVE YOURSELF.

Rewire Your Anxious Brain: How to Use the Neuroscience of Fear to End Anxiety, Panic and Worry, Catherine M. Pittman and Elizabeth M. Karle
20 Rewire Your Anxious Brain: How to Use the Neuroscience of Fear to End Anxiety, Panic and Worry
Catherine M. Pittman and Elizabeth M. Karle USA New Harbinger 2015 1626251134 / 9781626251137 Soft cover New Book 22.8 x 15.4 x 1.3 cm
Do you ever wonder what is happening inside your brain when you feel anxious, panicked, and worried? In Rewire Your Anxious Brain, psychologist Catherine Pittman and author Elizabeth Karle offer a unique, evidence-based solution to overcoming anxiety based in cutting-edge neuroscience and research. In the book, you will learn how the amygdala and cortex (both important parts of the brain) are essential players in the neuropsychology of anxiety. The amygdala acts as a primal response, and oftentimes, when this part of the brain processes fear, you may not even understand why you are afraid. By comparison, the cortex is the center of "worry."That is obsessing, ruminating, and dwelling on things that may or may not happen. In the book, Pittman and Karle make it simple by offering specific examples of how to manage fear by tapping into both of these pathways in the brain. As you read, you'll gain a greater understanding how anxiety is created in the brain, and as a result, you will feel empowered and motivated to overcome it. The brain is a powerful tool, and the more you work to change the way you respond to fear, the more resilient you will become. Using the practical self-assessments and proven-effective techniques in this book, you will learn to literally "rewire" the brain processes that lie at the root of your fears.
