4 A Celebration of Motherhood: A Beautifully Illustrated Anthology of Verse and Prose
Edited by Fiona Hunter UK Lorenz Books 2013 0754826341 / 9780754826347 Hardcover New Book
This title is a beautiful illustrated anthology of verse and prose. This lavishly-illustrated and decorative collection brings together beautiful works of art that have been specially selected to accompany delightful pieces of verse and prose. It is a book that commemorates and reveres the role of mothers in families and in society. It is the ideal gift for every mother of any age, and for children at any stage of their lives, who remember their mothers with love and gratitude. This charming anthology is a celebration and commemoration of motherhood - its joys and anxieties, its excitements and surprises, happiness and sorrow, sweetness, pain, laughter and tears. The book is illustrated with beautiful paintings of mothers in all their glory, pictured with their children; nursing sleeping infants, feeding a lively family, playing with red-cheeked toddlers, reading bedtime stories. The quotations include poetry, letters, thoughts and prose epiphanies from mothers, grandmothers and children - whether grown offspring remembering their own mothers, or mothers exploring their feelings about childbirth, parenting, and special daughters and sons. Often, everything that is good in us is passed on to us by our mothers, and our memories of our own mother infuses every act of love, generosity and care through our lives.

The Bhagavad Gita, Translated by Laurie L. Patton
12 The Bhagavad Gita
Translated by Laurie L. Patton UK Penguin 2008 0140447903 / 9780140447903 Soft cover New Book B-format
'Know this: that with which all this world is woven is not to be destroyed. No one is able to effect the destruction of the imperishable' The Bhagavad Gita is an early epic poem that recounts the conversation between Arjuna the warrior and his charioteer Krishna, the manifestation of God. In the moments before a great battle, the dialogue sets out the important lessons Arjuna must learn to change the outcome of the war he is to fight, and culminates in Krishna revealing to the warrior his true cosmic form, counselling him to search for the universal perfection of life. Ranging from instructions on yoga postures to dense moral discussion, the Gita is one of the most important Hindu texts, as well as serving as a practical guide to living well.Laurie patton's accessible and elegant new translation reflects The Bhagavad Gita's status as both an aesthetic and a social document, and her introduction examines the structure of the poem and the various commentaries on it through the ages. This edition also includes suggested further reading and a glossary of terms. About the Author: Laurie L. Patton, is Winship Distinguished Research Professor and Chairperson (1996). She earned her B.A. from Harvard University and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. For several years during the last two decades she has made her Indian home in Pune, Maharashtra. Her scholarly interests are in the interpretation of early Indian ritual and narrative, comparative mythology, literary theory in the study of religion, and women and Hinduism in contemporary India.

Most of my poetry started out written by pen or pencil on whatever paper was available at the time; such as paper napkins (accompanying a coffee and the compulsory cookie or cake), or the inside of a emptied breakfast cereal box. The poems were collected in a scrapbook, currently residing in the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet. Many were then typed on a small portable typewriter in its tan coloured case. The scrapbook and typewriter accompanied me by car out of British Columbia, the furthest west province of Canada; down the western coast of the United States through Washington, Oregon and California. This treasured pair then accompanied me as hand luggage across the Pacific Ocean as I migrated to New Zealand and then Australia. The typewriter was eventually sold at a garage sale leading up to our most recent move in 2002. At some point my much travelled friend was replaced by a computer (Commodore 64, I believe). After many computer upgrades, I now have all my prose poetry collection saved on my desktop and backed up on a USB stick. As I have exposed my emotions and interests to you in this collection of poetry, I trust you have been touched by at least one of them.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, William Shakespeare
14 The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare UK Wordsworth Editions 2007 1840225572 / 9781840225570 Hardcover New Book 24.0 x 16.0 x 5.4 cm
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is acknowledged as the greatest dramatist of all time. He excels in plot, poetry and wit, and his talent encompasses the great tragedies of "Hamlet", "King Lear", "Othello", and "Macbeth" as well as the moving history plays and the comedies such as "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Taming of the Shrew" and "As You Like It" with their magical combination of humour, ribaldry and tenderness. This volume is a reprint of the Shakespeare Head Press edition, and it presents all the plays in chronological order in which they were written. It also includes Shakespeare's Sonnets, as well as his longer poems "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece". AUTHOR: William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 ? 23 April 1616)[a] was an English poet and playwright now widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.[1] His surviving works include at least 38 plays,[b] two long narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a few other poems. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). He is the world's most performed playwright, and his works have been translated into every major living language.[2] Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, and at the age of 18 married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592 Shakespeare moved to London, where he found success as an actor, writer, and part-owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later known as the King's Men). Shakespeare appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, and died there three years later. Few records survive concerning Shakespeare's private life, and considerable speculation has been poured into this void,[3] including questions about his sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were actually written by others.[4] Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1612. He is one of the few playwrights of the time considered to have excelled in both tragedy and comedy, and many of his dramas, including Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear, are ranked among the greatest plays of Western literature.[5] Shakespeare greatly influenced subsequent theatre and literature through his innovative use of plot, language, and genre. He ultimately influenced the English language itself, and many of his quotations and neologisms are in everyday use. Among literary and dramatic critics, Shakespeare is probably best known for creating realistic characters, capable of expressing the full range of human experience, in an era when dramatic characters were either flat or merely archetypes. Even villains such as Macbeth and Shylock could elicit understanding?if not sympathy?because they were portrayed as recognizably flawed human beings.
