Getting the Details Right: Restoring Australian Houses 1890s - 1920s *** Temporarily Out of Stock ***, Ian Evans
7 Getting the Details Right: Restoring Australian Houses 1890s - 1920s *** Temporarily Out of Stock ***
Ian Evans Australia Flannel Flower Press 2010 1875253033 / 9781875253036 Soft cover New Book 28.4 x 21.0 x 1.3 cm
Working drawings with dimensions for constructing fences, gates, doors, windows, chimneys, verandahs & garages for houses of the late 19th & early 20th centuries. This book is the result of countless hours of fieldwork a tape measure and notebook, painstakingly measuring, recording and drawing some of the most important details of old Australian houses. The designs which it contains provide all of the dimensions and construction details necessary for restoration work on a variety of Australian housing styles in the period from the late 1890s through to the late 1920s and beyond. There are chimneys, fences, gates, doors, windows, verandah columns and garages for federation houses, Californian bungalows and the various other styles of cottages, villas and houses of the period. These are working drawings, ready to be put to use on site, but they are also designs of great beauty and considerable appeal. Spanning the period from art nouveau, they display all the attributes of an age when attention to detail was taken for granted. Because most of the information which it contains was obtained from actual buildings, the book in a very real sens contains the sound, practical advice of the designers and builders of old Australian houses. It is they who created the designs which are illustrated here. It is they who tell us how to restore the buildings of the first quarter of the twentieth century. The drawings are linked by text which provides a concise description of building restoration and conservation theory and practice. Both drawings and text are the result of the combined efforts of specialists in this field, making Getting the Details Right a most useful contribution to the growing body of literature on the architectural heritage of Australia.

8 The Queensland House: History and Conservation *** Temporarily Out of Stock ***
Ian Evans Australia Flannel Flower Press 2010 1875253173 / 9781875253173 Soft cover New Book 27.0 x 21.0 x 1.1 cm
The houses of Queensland are unique in Australia. Broad verandahs shaded by gracefully curved expanses of roofing iron, tall stumps, lattice, roof ventilators, and a host of the subtleties combine to give the Queensland house of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries its own special qualities and visual character. It might be thought that determining why Queensland houses are so very different from those found elsewhere in Australia would be a simple matter. But it has taken years of research to unravel a very complex story and find the answers to some fundamental questions about the traditional architecture of Queensland. For example, why were houses built on stumps and set well above ground level? Where did ant caps originate? Who developed the concept of exposed timber framing on exterior wall surfaces? Some unusual contributors to the appearance of these houses have been identified during research for this book. They include a reform group of the Anglican Church, a Philosophical Society and a Brisbane jam factory that manufactured an item that became one of the distinctive features of the Queensland house. And some innovations that were not adopted have been noted including the ceilings of 'Deutsch biscuits' introduced by German settlers in the 1830s. Supplementing the historical information is a definitive guide to conserving these houses, produced by the National Trust of Queensland. This information will help to preserve the houses of Queensland and old timber buildings elsewhere in Australia into the twenty-first century.

Grand Designs Handbook: The Blueprint for Building Your Dream Home [used book], Kevin McCloud
14 Grand Designs Handbook: The Blueprint for Building Your Dream Home [used book]
Kevin McCloud UK Harper Collins 2009 000730742X / 9780007307425 Soft cover Good Book 27.2 x 19.2 x 2.2 cm
TV's architecture and design guru Kevin McCloud shares his passion and expertise in this brilliant guide to designing and building your own home, illustrated with the most memorable houses from the award-winning Channel 4 series. The book goes way beyond the confines of the usual TV tie-in. Over the 11 years that Grand Designs has been on our screens, Kevin has had plenty of opportunity to formulate his own strong views on what makes truly brilliant architecture. For the first time he can share those views fully, showing that 'houses too can be architecture' and giving any aspiring self-builder the maximum number of tools to ensure that their vision becomes reality, with the minimum amount of heartache along the way.Through three main sections - 'Thinking', 'Dreaming' and 'Doing' - he guides you through each stage of the self-build process, from working out what you really want, to finding a plot, obtaining planning permission, commissioning and briefing architects and builders, and implementing the build itself. Structured around fundamental locations - urban, suburban and rural - Kevin presents his own compendium of houses from across the UK which he finds exciting and exemplary. Some of the most successful projects from the TV series are featured, including Monty Ravenscroft's innovative house in Peckham with its retractable roof, a reinvented violin factory in Waterloo, a converted barn in Ross-on-Wye, a spectacular loch-side house on the Clyde estuary and a glass pavilion on a beach near Exeter. As Kevin says, ' Green is no longer a weird colour to be' and running throughout the book is the theme of sustainable building and how to achieve it - not as some minority issue only of interest to those who knit their own sofas but as something which is increasingly central to how we will design, build and live in our homes.Passionate and opinionated, this book is always highly readable and engaging. For anyone who cares about design and for everyone who has ever thought about building their own home it is essential and truly inspiring reading.

Maisy Stapleton and Ian Stapleton Australia Flannel Flower Press 2010 1875253181 / 9781875253180 Revised and Enlarged Soft cover New Book 24.0 x 25.5 x 1.1 cm
Australian House Styles. An Illustrated guide to domestic architecture from 1788 to the present. This book takes us on a journey through Australian architectural history, from the bark and split-slab cottages of the early colonial period to the sleek corrugated-steel pavilions of the twenty-first century. In between are country homesteads, city terraces, Federation villas, Californian bungalows and the austere fibro-clad cottages of the 1940s and 1950s. Sixty-three carefully-detailed drawings illustrate the characteristics of every style. The text and drawings combine authority and authenticity with sharp social comment and a wry sense of humour. As well as the typical architectural features of each era, popular period icons such as Afghan hounds in the 1960s and off-road vehicles in the late 1980s are recorded. The drawings and text combine to create a book which provides several distinct views of its subject. It is a field guide to old Australian houses, an illustrated glossary of building terms and a short history of our domestic architecture. The authors are well-known heritage writers. Maisy Stapleton trained as an architect and has worked witht he Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales and the National Trust. Ian Stapleton is a conservation architect with the firm of Clive Lucas, Stapleton and partners, which has restored some of Australia's most interesting historic buildings. 113 pages.
