Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
1 Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett USA Harper Collins 2006 0060853980 / 9780060853983 Soft cover New Book Mass Market
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon--both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle--are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

Every world has its rules--even a flat one carried by four elephants riding on a giant turtle. That's why a dying wizard is searching for an eighth son of an eighth son to bestow his wizardly powers upon before meeting Death in six minutes. Unfortunately it is quicklydiscovered--though not quite quickly enough--that the newborn babe the wizard anoints just before bidding the Discworld adieu is, in reality, a girl! What's done cannot be undone--despite old Granny Weatherwax's attempts to bring the child into the witchy fold--and little Eskis now a wizard, through and through. And she's destined to bring chaos and confusion to the all-male faculty of Ankh-Morpork's Unseen University . . . who are already fairly addled to begin with.

Monstrous Regiment #31 Discworld [used book], Terry Pratchett
3 Monstrous Regiment #31 Discworld [used book]
Terry Pratchett USA Doubleday 2003 0385603401 / 9780385603409 Hardcover Good Good Book Royal
War has come to Discworld ... again. And, to no one's great surprise, the conflict centers on the small, insufferably arrogant, strictly fundamentalist duchy of Borogravia, which has long prided itself on its ability to beat up on its neighbors for even the tiniest imagined slight. This time, however, it's Borogravia that's getting its long-overdue comeuppance, which has left the country severely drained of young men. Ever since her brother Paul marched off to battle a year ago, Polly Perks has been running The Duchess, her family's inn - even though the revered national deity Nuggan has decreed that female ownership of a business is an Abomination (with, among others, oysters, rocks, and the color blue). To keep The Duchess in the family, Polly must find her missing sibling. So she cuts off her hair, dons masculine garb, and sets out to join him in this man's army. Despite her rapid mastery of belching, scratching, and other macho habits (and aided by a well-placed pair of socks), Polly is afraid that someone will immediately see through her disguise; a fear that proves groundless when the recruiting officer, the legendary and seemingly ageless Sergeant Jackrum, accepts her without question. Or perhaps the sergeant is simply too desperate for fresh cannon fodder to discriminate - which would explain why a vampire, a troll, a zombie, a religious fanatic, and two uncommonly close "friends" are also eagerly welcomed into the fighting fold. But marching off with little (read: no) training, Polly (now called "Oliver") finds herself wondering about the myriad peculiarities of her new brothers-in-arms. It would appear that Polly "Ozzer" Perks is not the only grunt with a secret. There is no time to dwell on such matters, however. Duty calls. The battlefield beckons. There's a tide to be turned. And sometimes - in war as in everything else - the best man for the job is a woman.

Terry Pratchett USA Harper 2013 0062237349 / 9780062237347 Soft cover New Book Rack Size
Discworld's pesky alchemists are up to their old tricks again. This time, they've discovered how to get gold from silver-the silver screen that is. Hearing the siren call of Holy Wood is one Victor Tugelbend, a would-be wizard turned extra. He can't sing, he can't dance, but he can handle a sword (sort of), and now he wants to be a star. So does Theda Withel, an ambitious ingenue from a little town you've probably never heard of. But the click of moving pictures isn't just stirring up dreams inside Discworld.Holy Wood's magic is drifting out into the boundaries of the universes, where raw realities, the could-have-beens, the might-bes, the never-weres, and the wild ideas are beginning to ferment into a really stinky brew. It's up to Victor and Gaspode the Wonder Dog to rein in the chaos and bring order back to a starstruck Discworld. And they're definitely not ready for their close-up!

5 Reaper Man #11 Discworld
Terry Pratchett USA Harper 2013 0062237357 / 9780062237354 Soft cover New Book Rack Size
They say there are only two things you can count on. But that was before Death started pondering the existential. Of course, the last thing anyone needs is a squeamish Grim Reaper and soon his Discworld bosses have sent him off with best wishes and a well-earned gold watch. Now Death is having the time of his life, finding greener pastures where he can put his scythe to a whole new use.But like every cutback in an important public service, Death's demise soon leads to chaos and unrest--literally, for those whose time was supposed to be up, like Windle Poons. The oldest geezer in the entire faculty of Unseen University--home of magic, wizardry, and big dinners--Windle was looking forward to a wonderful afterlife, not this boring been-there-done-that routine. To get the fresh start he deserves, Windle and the rest of Ankh-Morpork's undead and underemployed set off to find Death and save the world for the living (and everybody else, of course).

Imagine, if you will . . . a flat world sitting on the backs of four elephants who hurtle through space balanced on a giant turtle. In truth, the Discworld is not so different from our own. Yet, at the same time, very different . . . but not so much.In this, the maiden voyage through Terry Pratchett's divinely and recognizably twisted alternate dimension, the well-meaning but remarkably inept wizard Rincewind encounters something hitherto unknown in the Discworld: a tourist! Twoflower has arrived, Luggage by his side, to take in the sights and, unfortunately, has cast his lot with a most inappropriate tour guide a decision that could result in Twoflower's becoming not only Discworld's first visitor from elsewhere . . . but quite possibly, portentously, its very last. And, of course, he's brought Luggage along, which has a mind of its own. And teeth."

It's just one of those days when nothing seemsto go right a most inopportune time for the first tourist ever to set foot (and carnivorous Luggage) on the Discworld to be extending his already eventful vacation. (Not that he currently has much choice in the matter.) But with a monstrous red star on a direct collision course, the future for the residents of this flat planet carried by four elephants riding on the shell of a giant turtle swimming through space appears uncertain at best. Fortunately, there is one individual who can save Discworld from total destruction. Unfortunately, that hero happens to be the singularly inept wizard Rincewind, who was last seen falling off the edge of the world."

Meet Granny Weatherwax, the most highly regarded non-leader a coven of non-social witches could ever have. Generally, these loners don't get involved in anything, much less royal intrigue. But then there are those times they can't help it. As Granny Weatherwax is about to discover, though, it's a lot harder to stir up trouble in the castle than some theatrical types would have you think. Even when you've got a few unexpected spells up your sleeve.
