The Glamour Girls of Bill Ward [used book][hard to get], Bill Ward
2 The Glamour Girls of Bill Ward [used book][hard to get]
Bill Ward USA Fintagraphics Books 2007 1560978465 / 9781560978466 Soft cover Good Book 30.2 x 22.6 x 1.2 cm
Renowned pin-up artist Bill Ward gets the full coffee-table treatment in this lavish oversized full-color paperback featuring Ward's most polished, fully-realized portraits of the 1950s. Imagine, if you will, an innocent but stunning young woman boasting the most unlikely Barbie-like proportions-and then some-poured into a wisp of lingerie or clingy cocktail dress, silky opera-length gloves, and sheer thigh-high stockings, perched precariously but not inelegantly atop a pair of dangerously high stiletto heels, and you've got the recipe for the quintessential Wardian glamour girl. Ward's girls became staples of countless men's and humor magazines, where he shared the pages with cult models like Bettie Page and fellow 'good girl' artists such as Dan DeCarlo and Jack Cole. Ward became the standard bearer and justly famous through the '50s and '60s for his angular, high-sheen images of improbably busty glamour girls, a kind of low-rent Charles Dana Gibson. What set Ward apart-and above-his talented contemporaries was his use of a medium called the cont, crayon. When drawn on a simple newsprint stock, this potent combination created a charcoal-like effect and color that gave Ward's original art an elegant sepia-tone quality. This volume features the best of Ward's Humorama work, including a selection of Ward's infamous telephone girls. Tame by today's standards, Ward's telephone girls were considered provocative at the time, caught as they were in various states of dress or, more often, undress. The majority of the images in this volume were drawn between 1956 and 1963 when Ward was at the height of his skill, shot from original art and printed in full color. This book not only reproduces over a hundred beautifully rendered illustrations, but captures a more innocent moment in American pop culture.

A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction, Christopher Alexander and Sara Ishikawa and Murray Silverstein and Max Jacobson and Ingrid Fiksdahl-King and Shlomo Angel
6 A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction
Christopher Alexander and Sara Ishikawa and Murray Silverstein and Max Jacobson and Ingrid Fiksdahl-King and Shlomo Angel USA Oxford University Press 1978 0195019199 / 9780195019193 Hardcover New Book 20.5 x 14.6 x 4.5 cm
You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

The Art of Apple Branding: Australian Apple Case Labels and the Industry Since 1788, Christopher Cowles and David Walker
7 The Art of Apple Branding: Australian Apple Case Labels and the Industry Since 1788
Christopher Cowles and David Walker Australia Apples from Oz 2004 0646434209 / 9780646434209 Hardcover New Book
This highly collectable publication is for art directors, designers, printers, historians, sociologists and all those interested in our apple industry. THE ART OF APPLE BRANDING: AUSTRALIAN APPLE CASE LABELS AND THE INDUSTRY SINCE 1788 is the only book of its type to chart how Australian agricultural produce has been sold to the former British Empire and beyond. Colourful paper labels were used to create an identity and, when glued onto wooden boxes, they remained the dominant visual clue about the perishable contents marketed to the wholesalers in local markets and far-flung lands. Memories were long and reputations were made and lost on the quality of the produce represented by these examples of 'industrial folk art'. Dimensions (cm): 28.800 x 25.800

A Liar's Autobiography, Graham Chapman
16 A Liar's Autobiography
Graham Chapman Uk Methuen Publishing Ltd 2014 0413777286 / 9780413777287 Soft cover New Book
Graham Chapman reveals what it was like to be part of the revolutionary and zany Monty Python teamRequired reading for Monty Python fans, this true and false memoir is Graham Chapman's own hilarious account of his life as a Python and as a homosexual. The book equals Joe Orton's famous Diaries in providing an unblushing account of a gay lifestyle linked to entertainment. Full of outrageous fictions and touching truths, in telling surreal and outrageous lies Graham Chapman often uncovers a truth about himself and colleagues. The stories Chapman relates--whether as mountaineer or medical student (he was a doctor); actor or alcoholic (he was both); heterosexual groupie-guzzler or homosexual coming to terms with himself (bit of both)--form a surreal and crowded mosaic that is funny, disturbing, and moving by turns. A minor cult classic by a major comic talent.
